Misery

So I thought to write something about that word here.  Today, I heard that "Mercy" is..."to love the Misery of others". How confusing can that be to someone?  I love someone who I know I don't but I do because he is miserable, then I feel pity not love, so is pity love for misery in reality?
I guess, I'd like to know what you all think about this.
